StankNasty is poised to have an outstanding year as an artist. With consistency, his vocal and lyrical performance gets better with every release, as well as his content creativity. From the beat and sample selection, to conceptualizing tracks, word choice and flow, experimenting as he goes. Having already grown as an artist so much, he is ready for his next big move!
Pulling off some great releases this year, and as far as creativity goes, he executes with ease. He conceptualizes his ideas and artistic expression naturally with early tracks like CARNAGE and SCATTER BRAINED. He speaks with confidence and ferocity in his latest tracks ABOUT THAT TIME and PREACHING TO THE CHOIR. Dipping into his creative side with his GODS OF ROCK, sampling the iconic HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN. With all this work put in place, StankNasty creeps up to another milestone with his next release.
Plotting his moves every step of the way, through his effort you will KNOW THE NAME, which is the title for his latest release. Similarly to GODS OF ROCK, StankNasty samples a popular score, ARRIVAL TO EARTH by Steve Jablonsky, from the Transformers film franchise, giving the song a very cinematic energy. The track is going to be his first single release from his upcoming 3 track album EPIC-EP. Hearing his playlist and creativity evolve thus far, we should expect the project to produce some quality sounds.
Releasing her Debut album earlier this month HEAVN is jam packed with some of the more notable artists rising out of Chicago. From Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment to Saba, Noname and Odd Couple to Kweku Collins; Jamila Woods really knows how to bring it back to her city, as she has set forth to do. Being the associate director at Wordplay Youth Chicago Artists, which helped manifest talents and careers for artists like Chance the Rapper, Mick Jenkins and Saba, she gets to hear and experience the stories and struggles of the youth on the south side empathically, being raised in Beverly Hills, Chicago herself. She is working on a strong platform making her voice heard not for herself but for the voices unheard in his beautifully diverse city that fills her with complicated love.
HEAVN is Jamila’s debut album joining the ranks of the many independent Chicago artists after first making herself known through collaborations with Chance on Sunday Candy and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’White Privilege II. HEAVN holds powerful messages of love, awareness and resilience for the masses to hear as well. Songs like VRY BLK with NoName echoes the struggle of police brutality taking on the rhythm of the nursery rhyme Miss Mary Mack metaphorically singing serving and protecting is stealing babies lives. Then you have Blk Girl Soldier a strong vocally passionate song that brings to light the silent struggle of young black women.”Look at what they did to my sisters, last century last week, put her in a jar and forget her, they love how it repeats” Jamila sings as her video focuses on protesters holding signs saying Say Her Name, an organization bringing awareness to black women who have been murdered, beaten or go missing and never get reported on. The combination of the lyrics and video message highlights the strength of black women then and now who endure so much more and still rise to the top because they have to.
Jamila in the end carries the torch of love and empowerment among many strong female artists that hold the same message. When it gets down to it though she is an artist, with a heavy soul. A mere human as humbly reminded in Lonely Lonely, filled with doubts and concerns with the real issues internal and external. Here to remind you that even the strongest minds have their dark days and in the end you are all that you got and need. Just love and appreciate your blessings as she sings “My cup is full, what I got is enough, nobody completes me, don’t mess with my love” in her song Holy. Just wake up in the morning with your mind set on loving yourself, that in itself is a revolutionary act. Get inspired and download this album for free.
Lizzo is here to take off where older female musicians have left off in music. Not only is she a rapper she is a singer too. Her genres consist of hip-hop and alternative but she mostly delivers Feel Good music with bare beats. Lizzo just dropped her latest album Big GRRRL Small World in December 2015. She is here to teach us all about loving yourself, chilling with your friends and engaging daily life moods. She can definitely spit with the best of them in the rap game, then turn around and make you get all in your feelings.
Lizzo not only talks about self confidence in her music, she also expresses her concerns about being stereotyped and racism. “My blackness is my largest assumed ‘accessory.’ Not my gender, religion or wealth. Because of it, I’ve experienced countless misconceptions from people— neck rolls and gratuitous gestures, overt southern dialects superimposed onto my own voice, perceived “ghetto-ness.” I laugh it off because it’s seemingly harmless, but when we think about where this originates it’s actually poisonous”. All black women are not ghetto, mean and uneducated.
To humanize is to make something friendlier to humans. Humanizing makes things more cultured, delicate, and acceptable. This video is translation of making women with robotic features (guard up) when it comes to themselves and love. Then this guy comes along, who seems to has good intentions, helps this women he is interested in become free (guard down). Listen closely as she also states the words human eyes which sounds close to humanize as well.
Lizzo is fearless, confident, strong, a beautiful BBW and independent. Young girls are being taught to change themselves to look a certain way for validation. Lizzo is inspiring women to be true to who they are. Slap them thighs and smile at those stretch marks! You will be loved as long as you love yourself first!
Lizzo will be at our very own Chicago’s Subterranean in Wicker Park on February 18, 2016 at 8:00pm. Definitely check her out and ask to take a picture.
Four Guys (Left to Right) Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Jarobi wore hip Afrocentric clothes and rhymed to jazz infused beats, formed a phenomenal hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest in 1985. QUEST was the original name of the group but was later given the prefix A Tribe Called by their high school friends.
ATCQ formed a crew with House music group Jungle Brothers and hip-hop group De La Soul, called The Native Tongues. Because of their live energy during performances, they created a buzz in the city of Brooklyn, New York which led them to get signed with Jive Records in 1989. This began the journey of a rap group prodigy for the 1990’s decade.
A Tribe Called Quest made it popular to talk about social issues that could be related to young African Americans such as sex, politics, relationships, stealing your parents car to joy ride and also the use of the N word. while still having fun encouraging positivity through it all. Unlike other hip-hop groups at the time ATCQ was in their own lane. They greeted jazz with bass-heavy rhythmic vibes and eclectic sampling. They have several memorable songs including Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It and (above) I Left my Wallet in El Segundo. When you listen to ATCQ music what message do you get from the song? How does the beat make you feel?
At this current time, A Tribe Called Quest is still performing at some events, making appearances with their old school friend’s on stage (Busta Rhymes, De La Soul) and new school artist as well. On November 13, 2015 they released a special 25th anniversary edition collection of the group’s classic debut album People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythm.
The album is a cool artsy looking trunk filled with remastered original tapes re-released with exclusive new remixes by a few of today’s biggest hip-hop artists who have credited A Tribe Called Quest as a major creative influence. Unfortunately it has sold out everywhere at this point so you may have to borrow a friends. Until then they are on social media so follow them below. It’s the Tribe Yall! Real Live Yall!
U2 is a group rock band that formed in Dublin, Ireland in the late 1970’s, a time before most of us reading this were even thought of. U2 formed in 1978 when drummer Larry Mullen posted a note on a bulletin board looking to form a band. The members are Bono (Lead vocals and guitar), The Edge (Guitar), Adam Clayton (Bass guitar) and Larry Mullen Jr. (Drums). This Irish rock band started out with a post-punk sound then exalted to many other genres of popular music. U2 has many different elements in music that target spirituality, philosophy, human rights, inspiration, sociopolitical themes and personal subjects.
A “Song for Someone” is the third single from U2’s latest album, Songs of Innocence. A tender song of awkward first love that is about Bono’s wife Ali; the couple first met when they were teenagers. “If there is a kiss I stole from your mouth,” he sings. “And there is a light, don’t let it go out.” They are still married to this day.
In their many of years of success, U2 has sold millions of albums with #1 albums in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom. They have earned Grammy awards, collaborated/wrote for many other musicians and joined soundtracks for major films (Batman Forever). They are also activist in many organizations for different countries all over the world.
U2 just finished their Innocence and Experience 2015 Tour . It opened in Vancouver, Canada in May and came to an end in Paris, France on December 7th just in time for the Holidays! U2 is still alive and kicking, listen to their lyrics to understand who they are. Still don’t know who they are? Follow them on all their social media pages or Ask your parents!
For the first time in nearly 3 years, The Neighbourhood released a brand new album this past Thursday. It included popular tracks such as Prey and R.I.P.2 My Youth. There was something very unexpected from this album, though. It seems like the band has changed their music style almost completely. Veering away from Alternative rock, they have made their shift to deep R&B. Overall, It’s personal. Extremely detailed lyrics are telling stories in their songs. You can hear the expression of emotions in the vocals.
Something that I really liked about this album is how it’s extremely re-playable. If that’s even a word, this is something that I can listen to over and over again. Each time you re-play a song, you’ll pick up on something new; whether it’s a piece of the beat, or learning more about the lyrics. The stories only get deeper the more you hear it.
Ever Evolved writers Will, Shelley and Lizzethe will now be kicking off our Throwback Thursday journey. We will be posting Throwback’s that will definitely bring nostalgia to Everyone. First up is Me Shelley and my Throwback is Blur “Song 2”
I got my head checked… By a jumbo jet…. It wasn’t easy… But nothing is…
Song 2” is a song by England rock band Blur, The hook starts with lead singer Damon Albarn yelling “woo-hoo!” as the distorted bass comes in. It was Released in April 1997, “Song 2” and climbed all the way to #6 on US Billboard Alternative Songs.
At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, “Song 2” was nominated for Best Group Video, and Best Alternative Video. Blur wanted the theme of the song to be Grunge which was very popular in the 90’s. In 2002 one of the members left the band and all the members decided to work on other projects. Blur reunited in 2009 releasing several singles, retrospective compilations, and toured internationally. To this day “Song 2” was nonetheless their biggest hit in the United States. The song has often been featured in pop culture.
A powerful voice that gives chills, expressive songs and a fashion beauty. Jessie Ware always appears on stage in a chic wardrobe ready to sing her heart out. Ware’s music videos are full of nature, people and visual images that usually illustrate the ballad that is being performed. This unique musician is from London, England. She debuted her album Devotion in 2012 and her latest album Tough Love in 2014.
“Say you Love” me was written by Ware and co-written with Ed Sheeran. This love song depicts that saying these four words mean more than just a hug, and time. Love is an highly dynamic word. When someone is in love, thinking about the other person and wanting to be with them all the time can be tough, because without them life would feel incomplete. Ware sings, ‘Cause I don’t wanna fall in love, If you don’t wanna try, and It sucks when a person falls in love with someone, and the other person is unsure about their feelings towards the whole relationship.
Jessie’s genres are Electronic, R&B and Tropical. Even though she is a fresh face to the music scene, she has caught the eye of many other artist, such as rap/hip-hop artist J. Cole who jumped on this track “Kind of…sometimes…maybe” with a remix. At the beginning it gets freaky 😝 with Cole’s lyrics then incorporates Jessie’s sensual soft voice for an even more seductive tone.
What’s Next for Jessie Ware
Jessie Ware is currently on tour in the United Kingdom for the remainder of the 2015 spring and summertime. Don’t feel down though, she does come to the U.S. very often to tour, perform on daytime television shows and collaborate with other famous artist like Miguel, Nicki Minaj and more. No this is not an ad from a popular fashion store in the mall, my friends this is a picture of Angus & Julia Stone. This brother and sister duo are from the land down under; Sydney, Australia. The sibling act formed in 2006 and their genres consist of Folk, Indie pop, acoustic music. They both are singer and songwriters that play the guitar and perform together on stage. Not only are they a well balanced team, they still have their own separate music projects going on as well. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nV50lmpVk1E] What a cool party and video. Julia & Angus are performing at a house party with lights flickering, liquor, people making out and dancing. The normal. “A Heartbreak” a rock/folk song with a soft rhythm guitar and drums is easy to vibe too in a small intimate setting. It opens up about a young woman who went from a “good girl” to a “bad girl” when she starts to hang out with offbeat people in which she starts to see the world around her in a different aspect.
“Big Jet Plane” has a chill tempo like riding in a car on a rainy day thinking about someone special. With violins and a soft beat this definitely is an unwind song with a message. As it is expressed in the opening lines “She said ‘hello mister, please to meet ya’; I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her; She smelled of daisies, she smelled of daisies; She drive me crazy, she drive me crazy” Meeting someone out the blue for the first time can be a tense. If the attraction is real it creates the feeling of infatuation so trust me for future advice take a chance don’t miss an opportunity talk to that person. Let this song give all people motivation.
What’s up Next for Angus & Julia Stone

PHANTOGRAM is the electronic psych pop duo from upstate New York, comprised of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel. Their music is a blend of head-knocking, unique street beat sounds with psychedelic melodies. Sarah sings lead vocals, plays the keyboard, and co-writes all of the songs with Josh, who also does vocals, creates beats and plays the guitar. The band has released three studio albums Eyelid Movies in 2009, Nightlife in 2011 and Voicesin 2014.
When I’m small opens up with a hip-hop beat then adds guitar with a pop rhythm that latches on next by the second verse. The bass line establishes the vibe of a deep tempo leaving the rest of the track to cause a reaction. Whether a person only likes only a certain genre, many different genres are fused together in this song producing one sound. It also tells the story of an abused woman and her inner conflict concerning her abusive partner.
The real meaning of Phantogram is an optical illusion; but in this case the video is also a non-concrete image, merged with music, art and fashion. This is just another way of the duo introducing themselves to the world. Fall in Love explains how a woman can also be the heart breaker. A man can fall in love with a woman on the flip side the woman may not feel the same way ‘Cause you were falling…..I’m sorry baby 🙁
What’s next for Phantogram
