Father Darko – Don’t Worry, This Will Pass Too: Artist of the Week

Father Darko, who also is known as Mikal Bae for visual work and music videos, recently put out a 3 song, ambient, trippy, jazzy, dusty, boom-bap fusion, instrumental project. Father Darko has put out at least 9 records since April of 2019, and he deserves more recognition for his consistent output and additions to the culture and community. It is always fascinating to see more Father Darko tunes alongside slapping music videos from his visual brand, Mikal Bae.

It is Quite surprising in how fast this project can be consumed. You will unknowingly have it on repeat before you can process what you have heard. Track one, I DIED IN MY DREAMS AGAIN, features a range of complex composition culminating in a Travis Scott sample, that blends quite well with Father Darko’s drums, melodies and extraneous sounds. Track 2, WHEN IM AFRAID TO LOSE MY MIND, has a more sweeping luxurious, quasi melancholic sound and feel to it. Father Darko features Nelo Sahd on this song, who is assumed to be the screaming vocals towards the end of track.

The third and final song on the 3 track record is DROWNING, IT’S SOMETHING YOU’LL GET USED TO. The drums on this record sound like whips cracking, coinciding with these distorted, high pitched feminine sounds. It is an extremely interesting blend and feels highly futuristic or something right out of the video game, PORTAL. There is a depressed, ominous, robotic vibe that seems to glaze the entire 3 song project. A cohesive record of music that allows one to really ponder, and has one inside their own head for a time.

Artist of the WeeK: Na$im Williams

The DJ is the back bone for any artist or venue, especially when it comes to Hip Hop. A selfless title, the DJ makes sure the party is entertained, playing and promoting music from a wide variety of artists and genres. Even during lock down, while all live performing artists and venues are held back, the DJ is thriving still, through live streaming and mixes. Artists like Na$im Williams move to take advantage of the time, connecting with artists and putting his city on.

Na$im has been putting many artists on for a while, and some prominent names too, as he juggles music production as well. Creating a combination of boom bap and soulful beats, his production has taken him from the East Coast in New York, to the West Coast to LA. He has produced tracks for many Chicago artists like the Savemoney collective, ProbCause, Rich Jones, Lili K and more. All the while Djing for various Chicago nightlife spots, opening up for the likes of NaS, Travis Scott, Vic Spencer, and popular names; Na$im does not skip a beat.

Today he premieres his latest release here at Ever Evolved, where we promote Chicago; Na$im delivers just that, all in an hour long mix. From start to finish, you hear nothing but local Chicago Hip Hop, Rap & Soul from the best artists in the city, many being unreleased tracks. Starting off gritty with DRUGS by Doc Supreme, transitioning into the R&B vibe with GOODNIGHT by Sisi Dior, for a nice balance in energy. He turns it up a bit with a raw beat and quick lyricism by Radcliff Music, and gets even more hype with next track, MONEY CALLING, by WorldInKaos. He keeps it going like this throughout the mix, promoting popular artists in the city like MOECYRUS, Novatore, Vic Spencer, as well as Ever Evolved artists Radcliff, RhymSter, JaitheArtist, Essse, Wilhelm Duke, J-Bose and BeatrixKiddo. The smooth transitions ensures a quality hour of hip hop music, from artists in our own backyard, this mix carries a real vibe throughout.

Artist of the Week: Mikal Bae

Mikal Bae, also known as Father Darko, is the flagship visual artist of the Chicago music collective SlumpGang777. Mikal Bae is chosen as artist of the week for a few reasons. The first is that he has been cranking out visuals like crazy for artists such as CantBuyDeem, Chore Boy, T.Z.Duhh, Sage the 64th Wonder, Orlando Coolridge, Flxtch, Unkle Slump, Vex the MC, Fxther Kari (Khalil Halim), Millie Boy, Novatore, and alexSlander. The second is that he has also put in a lot of work visually and aurally; shooting footage and djing live events such as SlumpFestIII and the Midwest Slump Tour! And lastly Mikal Bae as an audio, visual and graphic artist, lo and behold, he also releases music! Mikal Bae has dropped I Can Feel the Sadness in My Toes, The Man Who Ate God, If Home is Not Here. Where Is It?, All That Never Was and From Darko With Love.

He goes by Mikal Bae visually and Father Darko to present his records. Multi-talented to say the least; Visually I would describe his style as graffiti drip. I honestly could not even explain what I mean by that but I encourage you to go look at his IG page and take some ganders at his music videos by searching up Darko Visuals on YouTube both linked below. He also designs merchandise for the SlumpGang777 collective! There are these custom glass spoon pipes that have “SL” on the front of the bowl that catches the eye. He also has these tie dye shirts that are orange, black and white stamped with SlumpGang777 logos.

Mikal Bae has always been a freelance hustler and for as long we can tell his only job has been in the music, art, and entertainment business. He is not a tradesmen, he is an artist. You do not necessarily pay him for commissions, you commission him to bring and give something more life! You have a song? He can make an amazingly unique visual loop to it. You a need music video? He will shoot, edit, and produce it. If you need a live visual DJ to enhance the entertainment value of your show? He will use a beat pad to syncopate live visuals to your set!

Mikal Bae aka Father Darko is someone you want to pay attention to especially if you are a lover and fan of all things hip hop. From music videos, merchandise, visual loops, artwork, fliers, recorded songs, visually deejaying and producing. He can really do it all and artists like this are people we want to be highlighting every week!

the Anti Social Harmonic Sapien

Long hours working on beats and instrument samples you can easily conclude a producer spends most of his time alone in a room with sounds bouncing around their minds. But where most people suffer Harmonic Sapien thrives; in fact the greatest minds have been shaped in solitude. Shaping not just his mind but the music, a sound bender. Note exactly Anti Social, just driven. Joining a growing number of experimental producers in Chicago, like Monte Booker, Knox Fortune, OddCouple and Glassic that let their music speak rather than the MC, though not dismissing the importance and necessity between the two

Anti Social EP is a short one but it is packed with wavy instrumental rhythm leaving you dreaming. You can hear some old school influence to provide an authentic and raw sound. Slightly varying from his Natural State LP containing more contemporary sounds and bass and some artist collaborations. Moving into 2018 the Sapien is already planning out his projects; A new album in the works, few EP and Harmonic Fest to follow so keep your ears peeled.
