THROWBACK THURSDAY: QUEEN LATIFAH

queen-latifah 1

All hail to the Queen! Welcome into her Queendom! Dana Elaine Owens has graced the world with her rapping style, elegance and courageous character. She wears many hats in the industry as a musician, television, film actress and producer, activist, president of a music label and entrepreneur. Might I add she is an CoverGirl brand spokesperson. Her personality alone turned her into an enterprise and a legendary female rapper.

“I was always taught to walk with my head up, to be a Queen”

Queen Latifah came in the rap game raising eyebrows from day one. Why are women not seen as equal to men? Why are women being disrespected in society by being called negative names and seen only as sex symbols? Was this our fault? NO! The Queen not only talked about the discrimination and lack of respect towards women she also rapped about how women need to also get together on their own while continuing to be strong.

In the 80’s and 90’s decade women weren’t to fond to be a companion in rap culture. Queen Latifah image was about strength, she never wore clothes to show off her body, only comfortable African culture apparel, casual clothing and sneakers. As her career evolved she still kept it classy and sensual. Her topics were about sexism, power and independence. This theme led to her hit song (above) “Ladies First” and “U.N.I.T.Y” (below)

Queen Latifah is still diligent in her current career pursuit of excellence. She has received awards for her work in film music plus she donates to worthwhile charitable organizations. Every year, Queen Latifah serves as co-chairman for the Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (In honor of her late brother who was killed in a motorcycle accident) to provide scholarships to students who excel scholastically, but are limited in financial resources. Queen Latifah has also written a book on self-esteem entitled Ladies First: Revelations of a Strong Woman. In honor of this Queen, let’s all inspire to make a positive difference in this world. #BlackHistoryMonth

THROWBACK THURSDAY: A TRIBE CALLED QUEST

tribe called quest 4

Four Guys (Left to Right) Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Jarobi wore hip Afrocentric clothes and rhymed to jazz infused beats, formed a phenomenal hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest in 1985. QUEST was the original name of the group but was later given the prefix A Tribe Called by their high school friends.

ATCQ formed a crew with House music group Jungle Brothers and hip-hop group De La Soul, called The Native Tongues. Because of their live energy during performances, they created a buzz in the city of Brooklyn, New York which led them to get signed with Jive Records in 1989. This began the journey of a rap group prodigy for the 1990’s decade.

A Tribe Called Quest made it popular to talk about social issues that could be related to young African Americans such as sex, politics, relationships, stealing your parents car to joy ride and also the use of the N word. while still having fun encouraging positivity through it all. Unlike other hip-hop groups at the time ATCQ was in their own lane. They greeted jazz with bass-heavy rhythmic vibes and eclectic sampling. They have several memorable songs including Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It and (above) I Left my Wallet in El Segundo. When you listen to ATCQ music what message do you get from the song? How does the beat make you feel?

At this current time, A Tribe Called Quest is still performing at some events, making appearances with their old school friend’s on stage (Busta Rhymes, De La Soul) and new school artist as well. On November 13, 2015 they released a special 25th anniversary edition collection of the group’s classic debut album People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythm.

The album is a cool artsy looking trunk filled with remastered original tapes re-released with exclusive new remixes by a few of today’s biggest hip-hop artists who have credited A Tribe Called Quest as a major creative influence. Unfortunately it has sold out everywhere at this point so you may have to borrow a friends. Until then they are on social media so follow them below. It’s the Tribe Yall! Real Live Yall!

MOTIVATION MONDAY: TEE SWAIN

TEE SWAIN 1

A Lyricists main focus is to illustrate a message in their lyrics. Rap lyrics is a form of street poetry that focus on many different things, depending on who is speaking about the harsh realities of the streets. The good times in life or personal situations. Chicago rapper Tee Swain is in his prime, but he will also prove his point between these crossroads in his music.

One question I always  like to ask artist is, Where are they from? I want to know where do they consider home is. Tee Swain was born on June 28, 1991 and raised on the West side of Chicago. “Out west is home so you know I’ve been out here my whole life”.

The meaning of motivation is the reason one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. It is a desire and energy that pushes people to move forward while succeeding. “The reason behind Motivation Music, it was just a time of my life where things got hectic and it just kept building and building, sitting heavy on my mind and my heart was just like you have to let some of this out”.

I asked Tee Swain what was his motivation in life and he stated, “My biggest motivation in life is my son, he keeps me going, he keeps me focused, while trying to keep myself up to make a better life for him”. Swain is so in tune with himself and believes that his music will go far into the masses because of his ambition for his son.  Tee wants to bless his son with a lifestyle that he never had growing up. He would like to share experiences together with his son and steer him in the right direction in life, and raise him in better environment.

Tee Swain is influenced by himself (not to be cocky) and also music artist  J. Cole. “It’s like listening to yourself , then listening to yourself… I listen to myself then apply it to the world it’s just like I don’t know myself but I’m picking up who Tee Swain really is and he’s really spitting some true stuff about life”. He respects that Cole touches on subjects that relate to himself in life. It inspires Swain to want to do the same thing as being a rapper who is a deep thinker.

What’s up Next for Tee Swain

Tee is currently organizing his moves for 2016. This past summer has been successful  for him as he performed at events, networked and let people know in these streets who Tee Swain really is. Swain Session III will be released some time next year. Tee is taking time and effort by locking himself in studio, writing and coming up with new ideas for his career. Tee really appreciates his fans that he has gained thus far so stay tuned. Tee said we all will be more shocked and surprised at whats coming, I can’t wait to hear it!

THROWBACK THURSDAY: BEASTIE BOYS

ASAP ENTERTAINMENT HIP HOP HONORS

(Left to Right) Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz  and Adam “MCA” Yauch formed this iconic Hip-Hop/Punk Rock group in 1981 at Yauch’s 17th birthday party. Ad-Rock was actually added to the group later on in 1983 replacing an old member of the group. New York is their home, New York is the city where it all started for these 3 guys.

When their first EP, Cooky Puss, was released it quickly became a hit in New York underground dance clubs and night clubs upon its delivery. It was first their first piece of work that fused together the underground rap phenomenon and the use of samples of prank calls.

Due to their success with Cooky Puss they hired a  college student as their DJ (Rick Rubin) and started performing at venues all over the New York scene. Rubin produced their next records under Def Jam and Capitol Records, the rest was history in the making as they continued to record and tour around the world. Their success led to 3 Grammy awards, MTV video music awards, and also features in films. Not only did they inspire the hip-hop community with their music they also were  activist by added their voice to the growing protest against the U.S. war on Iraq in 2003.

In April 2012, the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The following month, MCA died of cancer at the age of 47. In Brooklyn there is a children’s playground renamed for Adam Yauch in his memory. In June 2014, Mike D stated that the Beastie Boys would not continue their careers as a group, as a promise to Adam Yauch. Look out for their autobiography that has been postponed for a 2017 release. Purchase memorabilia on their social media pages below and continue to “Fight…. for your right…to partyyyy!” Rest in peace MCA.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: U2

U2

U2 is a group rock band that formed in Dublin, Ireland in the late 1970’s, a time before  most of us reading this were even thought of. U2 formed in 1978 when drummer Larry Mullen posted a note on a bulletin board looking to form a band. The members are Bono (Lead vocals and guitar), The Edge (Guitar), Adam Clayton (Bass guitar)  and Larry Mullen Jr. (Drums). This Irish rock band started out with a  post-punk sound then exalted to many other genres of popular music.  U2 has many different elements in music that target spirituality, philosophy, human rights, inspiration, sociopolitical themes and personal subjects.

A “Song for Someone” is the third single from U2’s latest album, Songs of InnocenceA tender song of awkward first love that is about Bono’s wife Ali; the couple first met when they were teenagers. “If there is a kiss I stole from your mouth,” he sings. “And there is a light, don’t let it go out.” They are still married to this day.

In their many of years of success, U2 has sold millions of albums with #1 albums in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom. They have earned Grammy awards, collaborated/wrote for many other musicians and joined soundtracks for major films (Batman Forever). WHO? RIO SCOOB

SCOOB 4

“I do Everything, I edit my own pics, Make my own beats, Mix and master my own songs, I’m my own manager”. – Rio Scoob

Independent artist are musicians that have total control over everything they want to display, we all know that nothing great was built in a day. When you listen to an artist’s music what is it that draws a person in? The Engagement, The Experience, The Lyrics, The Movement. Meet Rio Scoob.

Scoob was born June 28, 1992 and raised on the southside of Chicago. In his early Teens he moved in with his sister “second mom” and lived the suburban life in Plano,IL. He went to Yorkville High School, lived in Oak Park, graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School, chilled on the West Side, downtown, he’s been everywhere, Chicago is his city.

“My life was crazy, so I’m quite sure everybody else’s life is crazy, we all go through things”

Something we all can relate to with Scoob is that he has had a life that is crazy and sweet at the same time. In the midst of it all he was an average kid who really liked to play games. While having a conversation with him I believe I’ve heard him mention Pokemon, so he may be devotee.

“I didn’t really listen to music like that when I was growing up as a kid, growing up and shit I was into games and just being a weird child (laughs)”.

Around the age of 11 years old, Scoob was introduced to hip hop after he was questioned one day by a guy, if he ever heard of 50 cent?  Scoob mistakenly thought the guy was asking for money but he was talking about the rapper. From that day forward Scoob got curious, he started listening to the radio more, researching artist, while starting to rap and make beats of his own at the same time. He is grown man now, doing major things as his career progresses. Have a look-see at his Elevator freestyle above which dropped a couple a weeks ago. It has 3,000 views.

Having relationship issues? Rio Scoob just released a song last week “Ain’t Love” which also has 3,000 plays. His motivation behind the song was from his real life feelings and bad vibes that he and his present girlfriend go through, just as all of us do when in a relationship. “This is about people feeling single in a relationship in a way, it’s always someone getting their heart broke, everybody has a breakup story”.

What’s up Next for Rio Scoob

2016 is approaching fast, Rio Scoob is just getting started. He’s been performing many places such as the Music Garage and SubT. He is currently gearing up for the  releases of his LP The Scoobert Brenaman project and The RioGrandDay project. He calls his music (projects) instead of mixtapes. He will be delivering real life stories and events about his own life. When it is released he is open for honest critique, whether it’s good or bad pull him to the side if you meet him or DM him, he wants the feedback. Follow him on social media below and Stay Tuned!

ThrowBack Thursday: Tupac Shakur

2PAC

“You know what? Last time you said that, I was kinda trippin’, right? But now, you’re right. I am crazy. And you know what else? I don’t give a fuck”. – Bishop

This is a quote from Tupac’s character  Bishop from the 1992 movie “Juice” which starred this legendary Rap/Hip-Hop Artist. It has currently been slated that music video and film director Benny Boom will be the new director of the biopic “TUPAC” that is said to be released in Theaters in 2016. Before we all see the movie next year, here’s some facts on 2Pac before and after his death.

Recording Artist 2Pac was born on June 16, 1971 in New York City. Shakur’s parents were both members of the Black Panther Party. His parents militant style and influential beliefs for civil rights eventually stuck within Pac which also nursed his inspiring music. At the age of 13 and Tupac enrolled in the Baltimore School of the Arts before dropping out at 17. Shakur broke into the music business with rap group Digital Underground as a back-up dancer, rapper and roadie. At the 2:20 mark, 2Pac shares his verse in the “Same Song” tune.  Eventually Shakur released his first solo album in ’91, 2pacalypse Now,which faced social issues in America such as, racism, police brutality, poverty, black on black crime, and teenage pregnancy.

While he was most famous for his rap career, 2Pac was also a gifted actor, poet and a thoughtful outspoken advocate for the poor and the overlooked people in America. 2Pac’s unapologetic lyrics were relevant, important, and reflective of the hard lives led by many. His music earned attention and respect through a poetic style that embraced street vocabulary while being innovative. Tupac leaves a legacy of honest passion in his songs despite his run in’s with the law, East-Coast West- coast beef with another famed Rapper Notorious B.I.G. and his untimely death on September 13, 1996. He is respected by many and has become an inspiration for artists and a standard in rap music history.
