Manic Focus On LSD With Common & Vic Mensa: An Ode To Chicago

Every Chicagoan prizes certain parts of this great city, and we can all agree that LSD, the abbreviation for Lake Shore Drive, is one of the most iconic. With its breath taking scenery of the Chicago skyline, following Lake Michigan‘s shoreline, it makes for some of the most satisfying smoke sessions. Recently Chicago’s Manic Focus releases a remix of LAKE SHORE DRIVE by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah, an ode to the city, following in Probcause‘s footsteps, who used a slowed sample of the LSD lyrics about 5 years ago after WAVES. But Manic Focus choosing to keep the original sound, chop it up a bit and add a little bit of bass. Topping it off with two samples of iconic Chicago hip hop artists, Vic Mensa and the legendary Common. Packed with dope lyricism, balanced perfectly with Manics production, ending on a strong note lyrically and sonically, “It ain’t easy but we making it work ’cause we are children of the greatest nation on earth, are we not?

More Than An LSD Video: Jamila Woods

The anticipation was high and the room was packed from wall to wall in House of Vans on the night of the LSD video premier. Jamila Woods had thrown a free show in the early evening hours for fans to experience some live music. We all had the privilege to be the first to see the new visuals. The event highlighted a CPS student and aspiring film maker award and achievement as well as benefit SocialWorks, an art nonprofit under Chance the Rapper.

As the lights dimmed and the projector lights up the wall, the crowds chanted as Jamila appears angelic in Lake Michigan. Many women commending Jamilas confidence in her skin jeered louder. The setting brings us to the lake and more importantly, familiar neighborhoods, highlighting the deeper layers of our city. Chance the Rapper commands a grill surrounded by family and friends as children run and play around Jamila relaxing a kiddy pool in the front yard. A Chicago that is not linked to violence as too many assume. A side more reserved for the locals. As the camera pans across Chance the crowd lets out another cheer as simultaneously, the video leaves a warm feeling of grace for our beautiful city. The purpose of the video fulfilled. The idea coming Ashley Huicochea, from Prosser Career Academy who had the opportunity to work, learn and gain skills pertaining to film and directing.  An effort by Vincent Martell and Sam Bailey from VAM Studio to include more students in the process of film making. The dedication Jamila Woods, Chance the Rapper and the rest of their hardworking crew have for the newer generations inspires and positively influences Chicago greatly. Their collective effort  shines in the results.
