Musa Reems Turns Back the Clock with Dear Winter

Musa Reems is back with his new single entitled Dear Winter and he has taken initiative in turning back the clock on this one. Putting his own spin on the Jay-Z classic Dear Summer, Musa has added his name to the list of MC’s who have spat their game over this iconic Just Blaze produced beat. A list which includes names such as Lupe Fiasco, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and so many more. However instead of simply going in over the original cut of the instrumental Reems decided to breathe new life into this classic song, making it sound more current while maintaining its throwback vibe.

Producer Othellobeats took a fresh approach on here. He creates a lot of tension with how he slowly brings in the vocal sample in the beginning of the track and it really sets the stage for Musa when he comes in with his verse. Equally impressive is the way Othellobeats puts his own spin on the instrumental while simultaneously respecting what made it so great in the first place. Despite the clean, thematic feel of the intro, the beat still has the same soulful piano and vocal samples carrying the track. The only difference here is that this re-imagining of it sounds more lively. Like Othellobeats, Musa Reems does his thing on here as well.

Although the song clocks in at just 2 minutes and 18 seconds in length, Musa makes every second count on this one. His bars on here are nostalgic yet hopeful as Musa shows himself to be someone who can handle anything life throws their way. He approaches his lyrics with a staggering amount of transparency, showing that he is more than happy to own up to past mistakes. Reems’ delivery is also worthy of note here. He carries a sharp grittiness in his voice that shows the authenticity of a man truly marked by past experiences. Not phased by what anyone might think Musa Reems shows on this track that he is embracing his flaws as a human, wearing his war wounds on full display.

There is an interesting duality on Dear Winter. While the tasteful re-imagining of this song makes it sound like it could be on an upcoming project. Dear Winter still possesses enough vintage aesthetic at its core that it almost sounds like it could have been on a DJ Drama mixtape in the mid 2000’s. This duality really shows who Musa Reems is as an artist; a man who has a deep appreciation for the past while simultaneously keeping a close eye towards the future. Time will tell what Musa Reems will bring us next, but Dear Winter is surely a sign of good things to come.

Cofresi Keeps U High

If you think music is your drug then check out these tracks! Cofresi is back after enjoying the success of the Coda EP late last year. Started the new year off right with a video accompanied remix for the modern classic by Gotye, Somebody That I Used To Know. Cofresi’s take on the song really takes you by surprise if you think the original was overplayed, this may change your mind! Behind the scenes Cofresi continues to detail his live performances as he prepares for a long list of events for the spring calender.

Introducing a theme to the tour with the release of Keep U High, his second release and first original of the year, you will notice the tour calender matching the songs cover art. Included in his tour will be Bassphysics, who worked with Cofresi on Keep U High, and Plantrae. On other dates Cofresi supports SoDown on their own tour making it a two in one commitment; capitalizing on the opportunity to make a big thing bigger!

Similar to artists like Elevatd, Cofresi keeps most his treasures exclusively for his live audience. Sometimes he is generous to give some his online fans a taste of the exclusive but it would be best to catch him live. Following his Keep U High release with Bassphysics, Cofresh drops visuals from a live set as he plays his own version of Liquid Stranger and Space Jesus‘s collab track Dragonhawks. An surprising choice for Chicagos future bass drummer but an impressive take as can see through the crowds reaction; or even your own stank face.

Follow Polaris to LWKY Music

Like the North star, Polaris will guide you to some real dynamic tunes! Leading you to the LWKY corner of the universe, this trio from Chicago follows the growing number of electronic dance music artists experimenting with live instruments and midi software. Jim Morrison predicted an electronic age of music where one man, the DJ or producer, was the orchestra but changing the paradigm are artists like LWKY using guitars, piano synths and midi controllers within a group.

Together they create a psychedelic future funk and bass sound similar to that in Colorado and getting popular in mid-west states. They just came out with their latest release Polaris. This comes after their very popular EP Reset and their follow up single Regenerate. It is about a journey to the top, you can hear it with its soothing to heavy sounds between climaxes and breaks; an audio metaphor. With a style quite unique to Chicago, LWKY shows us how dynamic a band can be.

Bassmnt Boy Loves BBB And It Shows

Some like them more than others, some like them so much they make music about them. Bassmnt Boy likes em just enough to make a remix about them. Round2 already seems to have expressed it perfectly enough so Bassmnt Boy just took his Big Booty Bitches track and personalized it. With admiration to the original artists talent, he carefully turned a juke beat into a trap & bass anthem that does not dissapoint the original; Get any party wild and jukin’ with this beat.

Goodsex Gives Us Joy and Groovy Vibes

Goodsex is just here to show you how good you already are and it shows! Aside from all the great puns that you and I both have running through our minds, it is important to realize the power of music and the message it can send to its listeners. This Chicago duo takes that idea an extra mile sending positive messages and high vibes to their fans in each song they put out. From their originals to their remixes, all their songs do is make you believe in love!

Their latest project comes to fruition after a simple request of their fans. From their EP With Friends Vol. 1 the duo has a song called Joy and they ask their audience to send in footage of themselves enjoying life! The end result is a music video compilation of people having the time of their lives and you just cannot help but wiggle around and smile at the expression of life and love. This follows a remix collaboration of Birthday Sex with another familiar Chicago duo Birthdayy Partyy and a remake of a classic funk pop song Reach Out Of The Darkness by Friend & Lover. Their cycle of feel good lyrics and tunes makes a great playlist for people to get together and we think that’s So Groovy. It is most admirable creating a lifestyle through music that makes others feel good regardless of who they are.

RhymSter and Edmur Quinn Capture a Nocturnal Vibe on “Pure Noon”

Ever Evolved MC RhymSter is back again and with a vengeance with his first release of 2019 entitled Pure Noon. This 5-track offering — which includes a bonus track at the end — sees RhymSter and producer Edmur Quinn finding their pocket by utilizing a lo-fi, nocturnal sound.

The EP kicks off with a banger Maintainin where RhymSter takes his listeners to school by flexing his lyrical muscle over a bright and soulful instrumental. However the pace of the EP immediately slows down after with I Will which manifests itself as the perfect soundtrack for a night-time drive soaked in self-reflection. The closing 2 tracks N.Y.S.M. and Wait For It follow in a similar vein before things pick back up again on the bonus track Watch Out.

Lyrically RhymSter is poignant as usual. On the more hard hitting cuts his wordplay is witty and his delivery is sharp. On the slower, more subdued tracks he is more introspective and personal. He shows himself to be a truly multi-faceted artist over the course of these five tracks. On the production side of things Edmur Quinn presents a diverse palette here while simultaneously maintaining the concise cohesiveness of the project. Tracks such as Maintainin’ and Watch Out are hard hitting boom-bap cuts while I Will and Wait For It are much more moody and lo-fi.

The features on here deliver as well. FAFA, who is featured on Wait For It, croons with sincerity over a gorgeous jazzy guitar. JaiTheArtist shows up on the back end of I Will and her vocals sound angelic floating in the background. RhymSter and Edmur Quinn kept it simple on this project. However in between RhymSter’s witty lyricism and Edmur Quinn’s diverse array of instrumentals, their formula proved to be quite effective.

Mother Nature Keeps It Simple (Music Video)

If you have not heard of the refreshing girl power duo that is Mother Nature go look them up on YouTube right now. Charisma, lyricism, fun, artistic chemistry – these two have all of that. The Chicago native powerhouse duo comprised of emcees Klevah Knox and T.R.U.T.H. dropped the visual to their single Simple, which is from their upcoming 2019 EP titled Pressure. If the rest of their record is anything sonically like this first single Simple, then I think these two talents will really propel themselves forward in 2019!

The visual done by New Trash has the two ladies in black and white checkerboard pants and multi colored tops. They start off performing in front of a changing green screen with kids as their gaffers, directors, cinematographers, and lighting crew! The hook to this song is super catchy: “I do not do what you’re doing, bitch you’re simple!… I am me and you are you, bitch you’re simple!” Then the visual progresses from there with a verse and a bridge from Klevah Knox and a verse from T.R.U.T.H keeping the high energy, fun, and intensity through out. I am excited to hear and see the rest of Pressure from Mother Nature in 2019. They represent something truly positive for hip hop and their image and sound as artists is what I want to be around to write about.

Love Kaskade Like You Used To

This Chicago native has been around for quite some time, acquiring living legend status, being among one of the most recognized names in dance music culture. Still as time passes with new music and new favorites from many artists coming and going it may be easy to forget our roots. Well Kaskade is back again in his zone to remind you where you came from with two recent original releases that hit closer to his classic house music sound, following Cold As Stone and his Odesza remix of Falls that hold a style more in tune with the contemporary future house and bass sound. On Your Mind and Love Me Like You Used To bring us back those ambient vibes we all love to dance too. Experimenting with many different sounds over the years that no doubt have influence on each new track, Kaskade always returns to what we love him best for and he has not lost touch one bit, he just continues to evolve and we come back to love him like we used to.

Always A Birthdayy Partyy

This Birthdayy Partyy was one of a surprise! Popping into the Chicago electronic music scene seemingly out of no where, the duo always seem to be where the party is at. They do however have a good history in the local music industry for those that know. You would have luck catching them on the big stage at events like Spring Awakening, headlining popular Chicago venues or opening for big acts like Malaa with a heavy bass house sound growling between every beat. Needless to say they got a good support network and even better ear for music that controls a crowd.

With the music the two would be releasing to their fans it is no wonder they get the recognition they do. Reviving classics like Let Me Love You by Mario, Paramore‘s Misery Business, Gwen Stefani‘s Hollaback Girl and most recently, Jeremih‘s Birthday Sex on a remix collaboration with Goodsex because, well, how can they not? To add to their huge remix discography Birthdayy Partyy’s originals even top those releases if you can believe that. Their latest, Love Overdose, with Dusty Bits is a must have in your playlist with heavy bass synth chops, vocals and a smooth break down balancing the wild energy and alluring vibes. These guys bring a Partyy you do not want to miss so get to it, they are only getting started!
