It would be hard to say you have not heard of Chai Tulani if you frequent local music acts in Chicago. The man has been making moves left and right and making his music known. Born in Kenya and raised in Chicago, he started releasing mixtapes in 2013 with Visions of Zion, joining this burst of artists from the local areas. Tulani introduces his brand of Soul Hop music for Chicago to indulge in, creating more diversity in the music renaissance.
This year has been especially significant as he brings more audiences to his shows with newer music to perform! Between shows at Sub T, Emporium, the Metro and local festivals like Pilsen and TIP, fans flock to the stage to hear tracks like All The Way which is coupled with a music video feauture Ridley Victoria, and his most recent release Pulse. Locals Gifted Keys and John Renaissance join Tulani on the track for that added ambiance. If this music gets you excited enough Tulani is gearing up to release another project so sit put and catch some new ones at his next show while more music cooks up!
Its always good to hear new music from Sylvie Grace. Although she has been sitting on this particular piece of work her music sounds timeless. Produced by Letsuo, the beat is smooth as Sylvie’s vocals dances across the melody. She uploads Pumpkins following Lately and collaborations like You Aint Shit (Shine On) with Kweku Collins. You can catch this Chi-town singer songwriter and cello artist performing downtown Michigan Ave or apart of shows if you are lucky; appropriately at Untitled recently where Soul, Classical, Jazz and Swing fill the atmosphere. Follow us as we await more new music and ways to use her name with wordplay!
Stefan Ponce teams up with some reputable locals and fellow friends. Nothing like some Hip Hop and Soul with theMind, Julian Bell, Micah Freeman & Kyle. Few different vocal styles to make make the perfect jam for your favorite girl. This Hip Hop and Soul piece is fit with catchy hooks and verses, uplifting piano chords and lively percussion. Spread the love with this track on repeat!
The anticipation was high and the room was packed from wall to wall in House of Vans on the night of the LSD video premier. Jamila Woods had thrown a free show in the early evening hours for fans to experience some live music. We all had the privilege to be the first to see the new visuals. The event highlighted a CPS student and aspiring film maker award and achievement as well as benefit SocialWorks, an art nonprofit under Chance the Rapper.
As the lights dimmed and the projector lights up the wall, the crowds chanted as Jamila appears angelic in Lake Michigan. Many women commending Jamilas confidence in her skin jeered louder. The setting brings us to the lake and more importantly, familiar neighborhoods, highlighting the deeper layers of our city. Chance the Rapper commands a grill surrounded by family and friends as children run and play around Jamila relaxing a kiddy pool in the front yard. A Chicago that is not linked to violence as too many assume. A side more reserved for the locals.
As the camera pans across Chance the crowd lets out another cheer as simultaneously, the video leaves a warm feeling of grace for our beautiful city. The purpose of the video fulfilled. The idea coming Ashley Huicochea, from Prosser Career Academy who had the opportunity to work, learn and gain skills pertaining to film and directing. An effort by Vincent Martell and Sam Bailey from VAM Studio to include more students in the process of film making. The dedication Jamila Woods, Chance the Rapper and the rest of their hardworking crew have for the newer generations inspires and positively influences Chicago greatly. Their collective effort shines in the results.
Coming across Ridley Victoria I find a multi creative women confident in her artful expression in modeling, singing and songwriting; a detail even most mainstream artists lack. Born in Chicago she started songwriting at the early age of eleven but it was not until she hit twenty that she took up singing professionally full time as she tells Fashionbugla Media in an interview. Mainly influenced by a fusion of hip hop, pop and R&B her recent work would blend into reggae, swing, dance and jazz. Just as a model takes up different looks and styles, Ridley can try on different genres and make it her own.
Since the release of her debut album only two months ago in June Ridley made time for more releases and collabs. Most recently, she brought out the soul and R&B on Slow Down produced by Eddie J. Showing off her vocal range across any genre and her consistency releasing quality songs. Her album itself is filled with catchy and dynamic tunes.
Pretty on Purpose or her POP album is a 10 piece energetic multi genre project and an impressive one for her 1st. Speaks volumes about her potential. Starting off with Vogue, a fitting intro for a singer and model, its upbeat and colorful and sexy. Dialing it back with Love Out a swing styled pop track with John Renaissance. You get to Give It To Me and you hear Ridley ride a raggae beat. Continuing into her album you continue to hear a range of styles with more local collaborations with Chai Tulani, Adam Ness and Me’Chelle. A powerful addition to a growing community of strong and creative women in Chicago.
Put together by a kickstarter, their fourth full length album, Sidewalk Chalk unleashes an awe defying project that defines their growth as a group. Splitting the album into three parts, the band goes through the Hope, the Loss and the Birth. Kicking it off with energy and motivation with Infinite Growth and onto smooth love serenades with Take The Time. All the love and excitement give way to challenge and controversy. Wake Up, We Burn You Down highlights our abuse of Mother Earth; Will We shines light on the rising oppressive injustices of political elite. A Suite For Black Lives stresses ongoing police brutality towards the black community. How much will we take? Will we accept defeat or fight for peace?
In order for this change to happen we Bloom Again. Being grateful helps find the inner peace to bring change to your world. The Orchid Is Born personifies hope, struggle, change and growth through sound, ideas and events. A monument to the Sidewalk Chalks growth as a band working together and perfecting a sound and idea. Pulling their resources together to make this project happen with the best in production, Grammy award winner Robert “Sput” Searight. Taking this album tour around North America, you can catch them in Chicago late September. Details on their website!
