In a recent interview with Thump, the Chicago native Salva discusses plans to “graduate”, as he says, from the underground scene. “I did the club culture heavy” he says, “I’m not done [DJing], I still love it, but everybody goes through phases.” It seems Salva is wants to take next step in his music career and reach out to a broader spectrum of artists and audiences.
Over the past few years as trap music was gaining popularity Salva has made his mark known, producing and remixing his own style of the genre. Having made some very successful collabs with artists like the Crookers & RL grime, he has a solid history with his sound which not only stays in the realm of trap & bass music, but also incorporates house and hip hop elements. One of his more recognizable songs and collaborations is with RL Grime on a remix of Kanye West’s Mercy.
But even though Salva has mastered the trap genre he shows a growing distaste for it, and he makes it very apparent in the interview. “Trap isn’t even cool anymore” he continues, “if we look at music the way we do fashion, that shit’s been out of season.” So the next step for Salva is to make new music on a larger scale that attracts new artists to work with him and his sound and get his name out there.
“I’m looking for a little more substance” he explains, “I’m just looking for something deeper than sound effects and kick drums.” What he is more interested in now is “making timeless actual songs, making something of substance that can be covered.” Salva is already making the moves to put his idea in motion. At the end of April he made a new record label, Peacemaker, and released a track “Drop That Bitch” with familiar artists such as Kurupt, Bad Lucc and ScHoolboy Q.
Keeping this pattern going Salva teamed up with Nick Hook to produce a song Old English with verses by Young Thug, Freddie Gibbz and A$AP Ferg. Tracks like Drop That Bitch and Old Enlgish definitely break more into the mainstream as Salva hoped. Big names like Gibbz and Ferg working with Salva will definitely help him reach his goal to have a more recognizable name in the music industry. Looking forward to hearing more tracks by Salva and who he works with. Get more details on his interview with thump here and check out his latest track below.
