Deem Is Better, Ceaselessly

With an already vast playlist Deem adds a new EP to the discography. Produced completely by Mulatto Beats, Better is a quick 3 track experimental hip hop set. From the South Side of Chicago Deem demonstrates creative diversity, not only working with different genres but also blending subject matter. Creating music that stands alone and stands out.

Originally it was a project called Girl Crazy, along the theme of heartbreak and growth. After some advice and and unfortunate loss Deem tells Myriad Magazine how Better came to be. In a creative burst, he fits as much words he can think of on the three tracks and calls it Better. Confidently telling Myriad he knows this is content most artists are not capable of pulling off. Can you fully disagree after indulging in that predictable mainstream content?

Not stopping for a minute though Deem already has multiple projects in line for the future. Stay tuned for another video this Halloween and an EP in the works called Lil Third Eye to follow. Planning ahead to 2018 you will see an 2 track project and an album to hit all your senses. Exciting to see what kind of creations he comes  up with in his music next.

Joseph Chilliams – Henry Church

Joseph Chilliam pulls off an incredible album featuring a handful of local collaborators. Henry Church together Jamila Woods, Pivot Gang, NoName and Supa Bwe amongst others. The fellow Pivot-Gang co-founder shining light on West Side Chicago talent, didnt need much but his reputation to promote the LP. Coming out of a sold out show, his first ever to headline in Chicago to attest to that.

The message is clear he will not come to conform to society be real and true to yourself; and fuck Bow Bow. Henry Church is filled with wordplay, pop culture references, jabs at celebrities and some real talk. An LP than to define Chilliams character, he brings some loose comedy, west side attitude, and inspiring ambition to the mic. Of course it cannot go on without honoring the fallen, friends to family most notably John Walt Aka DinnerWithJohn and fellow Pivot Gang co-founder.

From the start its relaxed and playful; Setting the tone with Fergie, pulling his own spin off of a Fergalicious sample and demonstrating versatility in his flow. Then inviting MfnMelo on mic to get Buck. West Side meets the South as the mic is passed to Jamila Woods on Shake My Ass, with a seemingly reversal in roles between the two artist to make a statement about sexual consensual perspectives. Chilliams gets real with NoName and Supa Bwe on Kale standing tall against music labels, who really makes the culture? And kicking it back with FN – 2187 for a laid-back tribute track with SKYLR and Sen Morimoto.

Such is the attitude of the full LP and that only the one third of the LP. Layered with diverse lyricism and live instruments between raw production. The project appropriately concludes with a DinnerWithJohn outro. Hannah Vernier on cover art perfects the image of the Henry Church. Find you favorite track and put it on repeat.

More Than An LSD Video: Jamila Woods

The anticipation was high and the room was packed from wall to wall in House of Vans on the night of the LSD video premier. Jamila Woods had thrown a free show in the early evening hours for fans to experience some live music. We all had the privilege to be the first to see the new visuals. The event highlighted a CPS student and aspiring film maker award and achievement as well as benefit SocialWorks, an art nonprofit under Chance the Rapper.

As the lights dimmed and the projector lights up the wall, the crowds chanted as Jamila appears angelic in Lake Michigan. Many women commending Jamilas confidence in her skin jeered louder. The setting brings us to the lake and more importantly, familiar neighborhoods, highlighting the deeper layers of our city. Chance the Rapper commands a grill surrounded by family and friends as children run and play around Jamila relaxing a kiddy pool in the front yard. A Chicago that is not linked to violence as too many assume. A side more reserved for the locals.

As the camera pans across Chance the crowd lets out another cheer as simultaneously, the video leaves a warm feeling of grace for our beautiful city. The purpose of the video fulfilled. The idea coming Ashley Huicochea, from Prosser Career Academy who had the opportunity to work, learn and gain skills pertaining to film and directing.  An effort by Vincent Martell and Sam Bailey from VAM Studio to include more students in the process of film making. The dedication Jamila Woods, Chance the Rapper and the rest of their hardworking crew have for the newer generations inspires and positively influences Chicago greatly. Their collective effort  shines in the results.

August Belongs To Ethos

Ethos is the characteristic spirit of a culture, era or community. Is he a single representation of a growing community of creative geniuses coming out of Chicago? Or an activist and a voice echoing the resistance of ideologies and labels society places upon groups of individuals? Maybe a poet with deep perspectives on love and life?

In the beginning of the month, from Chicago, Ethos releases his debut album appropriately titled August. More than a musical measure it is filled with poetry defining creativity, beauty, power and change. A love note to Chicago in his own words. On the album are a series of collabs including Smoko Ono, Ashe Om, Tasha, Morimoto, Chul, Happie and Cosmo. Loaded with local talent this LP’s unique presentation challenges traditional album projects.

Model of Music: Ridley Victoria

Coming across Ridley Victoria I find a multi creative women confident in her artful expression in modeling, singing and songwriting; a detail even most mainstream artists lack. Born in Chicago she started songwriting at the early age of eleven but it was not until she hit twenty that she took up singing professionally full time as she tells Fashionbugla Media in an interview. Mainly influenced by a fusion of hip hop, pop and R&B her recent work would blend into reggae, swing, dance and jazz. Just as a model takes up different looks and styles, Ridley can try on different genres and make it her own.

Since the release of her debut album only two months ago in June Ridley made time for more releases and collabs. Most recently, she brought out the soul and R&B on Slow Down produced by Eddie J. Showing off her vocal range across any genre and her consistency releasing quality songs. Her album itself is filled with catchy and dynamic tunes.

Pretty on Purpose or her POP album is a 10 piece energetic multi genre project and an impressive one for her 1st. Speaks volumes about her potential. Starting off with Vogue, a fitting intro for a singer and model, its upbeat and colorful and sexy. Dialing it back with Love Out a swing styled pop track with John Renaissance. You get to Give It To Me and you hear Ridley ride a raggae beat. Continuing into her album you continue to hear a range of styles with more local collaborations with Chai Tulani, Adam Ness and Me’Chelle. A powerful addition to a growing community of strong and creative women in Chicago.

Splitting the album into three parts, the band goes through the Hope, the Loss and the Birth. Kicking it off with energy and motivation with Infinite Growth and onto smooth love serenades with Take The Time. All the love and excitement give way to challenge and controversy. Wake Up, We Burn You Down highlights our abuse of Mother Earth; Will We shines light on the rising oppressive injustices of political elite. A Suite For Black Lives stresses ongoing police brutality towards the black community. How much will we take? Will we accept defeat or fight for peace?

In order for this change to happen we Bloom Again. Being grateful helps find the inner peace to bring change to your world. The Orchid Is Born personifies hope, struggle, change and growth through sound, ideas and events. A monument to the Sidewalk Chalks growth as a band working together and perfecting a sound and idea. Pulling their resources together to make this project happen with the best in production, Grammy award winner Robert “Sput” Searight. Taking this album tour around North America, you can catch them in Chicago late September. Details on their website!

Jovan Landry is a photographer, filmaker and emcee coming up in Chicago. On her own an inspiring individual; To woman in chicago and persevering artists. Always about a positive and strong message. The multidisciplinary artist flows with an old school hip hop and boom bap style with contemporary influence and conscious lyricism. With all her projects aside her music career is growing and getting stronger as she flexes the limits of her creative abilities.
