PHANTOGRAM is the electronic psych pop duo from upstate New York, comprised of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel. Their music is a blend of head-knocking, unique street beat sounds with psychedelic melodies. Sarah sings lead vocals, plays the keyboard, and co-writes all of the songs with Josh, who also does vocals, creates beats and plays the guitar. The band has released three studio albums Eyelid Movies in 2009, Nightlife in 2011 and Voices in 2014.
When I’m small opens up with a hip-hop beat then adds guitar with a pop rhythm that latches on next by the second verse. The bass line establishes the vibe of a deep tempo leaving the rest of the track to cause a reaction. Whether a person only likes only a certain genre, many different genres are fused together in this song producing one sound. It also tells the story of an abused woman and her inner conflict concerning her abusive partner.
The real meaning of Phantogram is an optical illusion; but in this case the video is also a non-concrete image, merged with music, art and fashion. This is just another way of the duo introducing themselves to the world. Fall in Love explains how a woman can also be the heart breaker. A man can fall in love with a woman on the flip side the woman may not feel the same way ‘Cause you were falling…..I’m sorry baby 🙁
